Critical Feedback: How to Listen, Learn and Improve

Receiving critical feedback can be challenging, as it can be hard to hear that we need to meet expectations or improve somehow.

However, receiving feedback is important to grow and improve as individuals. Here are some tips on how to receive critical feedback well:

  • Listen actively: Listen carefully to the feedback without interrupting or becoming defensive. Try to understand the perspective of the person giving the feedback and ask clarifying questions if necessary.
  • Don’t take it personally: Remember that the feedback is about your behavior or performance, not about you as a whole person. Try not to take it as a personal attack and instead view it as an opportunity to learn and grow.
  • Take time to process: Take some time to reflect on the feedback before responding. Consider what was said and why the person might have said it. Think about how you can use the feedback to improve.
  • Thank the person: Thank the person for their feedback and for taking the time to provide it. Let them know you appreciate their honesty and will consider their feedback.
  • Take action: After reflecting on the feedback, create an action plan to address any issues or areas for improvement. Set goals and milestones to track your progress and show you are committed to making changes.

  • Follow-Up: Now that someone has taken the time to invest in your growth, follow up with them on your reflections and action plan. If you have determined that the feedback will not result in changes, explain why.  Encouraging continuous feedback can strengthen the relationship and build trust.
